History

The Athenaeum is a private member-only club that first opened its doors on the campus of the California Institute of Technology, known as Caltech, in 1930.

In Ancient Greece, the word Athenaeum referred to buildings dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and in particular to a temple in Athens where poets, philosophers and orators gathered to read and discuss their work. Over the centuries the term has applied to numerous academies and learned societies.

As early as 1921, George Ellery Hale, astronomer and Caltech trustee, envisioned an Athenaeum in Pasadena. Completed in 1930, The Athenaeum was designed by architect Gordon B. Kaufmann with landscaped gardens by Florence Yoch and Lucile Council. It is a distinguished example of Mediterranean Revival architecture, characterized by its red tile roofs, smooth stucco walls, arched loggias and courtyards that blend indoor and outdoor space. Over the decades The Athenaeum has remained one of the campus’s architectural gems, retaining its historic character.
